InPrint is an award-winning student run magazine published annually at the University of California, Davis. Each issue is created entirely from student work. The magazine showcases thought-provoking articles written by students, accompanied by beautiful graphics and layouts designed to complement the stories being told.
My Role: Art Director
Timeline: October 2019 - November 2020
Software Used: Adobe Illustrator, Adobe InDesign

My Role
As Art Director, I led a team of seven graphic designers through the process of designing layouts and graphics that both complemented specific articles, and worked together as a cohesive aesthetic. I also worked with one of InPrint’s Co-Directors, Maggie He, to design a new graphic standard for this year’s issue. Additionally, I designed the illustration seen on the magazine cover.
Target Audience
UC Davis Students
Ages 17 -23 - As a student run magazine, most of the copies will be sold to fellow UC Davis students who want to read articles written and designed by other students that discuss personal stories and global topics.
Professors & Parents
Ages 35+ - Many professors on campus and parents of UC Davis students purchase and read this magazine to celebrate student work and learn about important topics through a new perspective.
Graphic Standard
Color Palette
The color palette was carefully curated to support the stories told throughout the magazine. Red, yellow, plum, and aqua serve as the four main colors of the primary color palette, each of which have two additional tints and three shades to create a stronger color story.

Cover Concept
The theme for this year’s magazine was “At The Margins”, with the goal of highlighting stories of marginalized communities and those breaking boundaries in their field.

Final Cover
I designed this illustration to visibly represent the struggle of being stuck at the margins. The figure on the left represents this magazine, using its platform to help pull individuals and their stories up and into the light.
Working Through COVID-19
On-Campus
Weekly meetings were held on campus to walk the designers through the design process start-to-finish for each of their assigned spreads. We also worked collaboratively with the student writers to discuss how we could use graphics to tell the written story in the most compelling way.
Work From Home
As UC Davis’ spring quarter shifted to remote learning, our team of designers was determined not to let the pandemic prevent us from meeting our commitments. We hosted one-on-one meetings with each designer through Zoom to ensure that we completed each spread.
Official Release
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, we were unable to get this year’s issue physically printed and distributed on campus. Instead, we releasing the entire magazine online for free. You can view it here! We hope this will increase exposure beyond our target audience and get more people interested in reading the magazine this year and into the future.
